"I Don't Got This..."
Reminders When Life Feels Hard
A couple months ago I went through what I can only describe as a total and COMPLETE sh*t storm. There were about ten unexpected and very urgent matters that hit my personal life and my business in a big way all at once. Some of the implications could have been truly life altering.
I was holding on for dear life and started experiencing some scary physical symptoms in response to the acute stress, such as sleeplessness, headaches, and chest pressure/pain. White knuckling through things is not how I operate anymore, but I found myself in that place.
(Spoiler: I got medical support and all is well! My body simply knew I was in a nervous system response to my stress, and while a few of the hard things are still affecting life/work today, they are manageable.)
I know I'm not alone here. Many of you share with me about how heavy and hard life has been feeling recently - and I love hearing your stories. Share away!
Now that I have some distance from my own nutty time, it has reminded me that we can all benefit from keeping some key principles in mind when things feel heavy, tense, or hard.
1. Remember it's temporary.
- Everything has a shelf life. Everything.
- Research shows that if you let yourself feel an emotion fully, without trying to restrain it or change it, it takes approximately 90 seconds to move through you. Experiment with letting the feeling move through.
- Take a deep breath and remind yourself: "This will pass. I will not feel this way forever."
- Even with big mistakes, people have a short memory and they move on. Even healing from heartbreak is a matter of time.
2. Normalize not knowing.
- It's okay to not know how to move forward and it's okay to not have an answer.
- Give yourself freedom to throw a 24-hour pity party before finding solutions (if possible).
- Freedom to surrender to what is currently happening. It simply IS.
3. Simplify.
- Delete anything that isn't absolutely necessary for your time and attention.
- Delegate anything you can to someone else to help carry the load.
- Delay anything that is important but not urgent or timely. Put it on the calendar for January or later.
