The Skill AI Can’t Replace: Public Speaking

Mastering public speaking is no longer optional—it’s the difference between getting opportunities and being overlooked.

As a former professor of public speaking and an expert business strategist, I need you to know one thing: Your public speaking skills can make or break your career.

Client Story: She Got the Job

One of my clients was up for a job promotion, and she was one of two finalists. The last stage of the interview process was to give a comprehensive presentation to the executive staff about what she would do over the next 5 years.

We strategically crafted her messaging, fine-tuned her visuals, and honed her presentation skills (vocal intonation, attire, movements).

Although she was not a professional public speaker, her dedication to the preparation process, her script, the vision casting, and her presence in the room made her the standout candidate. She got the job.

Following that, I coached her on skills for leading effective and compelling department meetings, presenting to their board of directors, training new members of her team, and giving proposals. Eventually, she was asked to lead their staff development program, speak on panels at industry events, and fulfill multiple interview requests on the company’s behalf. Her career soared as a result of some very simple and direct coaching - and her practice of it.

Your Speaking Can Make or Break Opportunities

Over the last 20 years, I’ve worked with leaders at Google, Disney, Amazon, and hundreds of small business owners—and no matter their title, industry, or revenue, one truth keeps surfacing:

Your ability to speak clearly, confidently, and intentionally in front of others determines your influence, your income, and your opportunities. Period.

Public speaking is NOT just about keynotes and stages. Per my client example, it’s about how you lead a weekly staff meeting, deliver a client proposal, onboard a new employee, or ask for a raise. It’s part of every profession.

Data: According to recent workplace studies, over 70% of professionals say strong communication directly impacts career advancement, yet only 8% receive formal training.

That gap is costing people influence, revenue, and trust.

4 Things Your Delivery Does

You don’t have to be a professional public speaker to make an impact, but you do need to know how to communicate in a way that lands.

All speaking, in its truest form, builds:

1. CREDIBILITY – People believe your energy before they believe your slides. You don’t have to be the leading expert to do this - there are tons of ways to create context and credibility that create validation.

2. CONFIDENCE – Anxiety drops when people feel like you know what you’re saying and doing. There are countless tips on how to cultivate this without pretending to be confident.

3. CLARITY – This will seem overly simple: When you effectively give people information, they can understand your concept better. Focus on speaking so people understand, not to be impressive.

4. INFLUENCE + TRUST – As the person delivering information, you automatically create the possibility to be seen as someone in leadership, which also invites deeper trust.

The Human Factor AI Can’t Replace

AI can write scripts, build slides, and even suggest talking points—but it cannot replace the weight of a human standing in front of a room and using their voice.

That’s why 90% of audiences say authenticity matters more than polish.

This is also why at Three Beats Consulting, our work goes beyond mechanics. We don’t just train speakers—we build authentic narrative authority.

The people who speak clearly are the ones who get heard. The ones who get heard are the ones who get hired, funded, promoted, and trusted.

And that can be you.
