Trying to Be Everything is Costing You
How to find what's yours to do: when to solo, when to sit out, and how to know the difference
If you’re feeling burned out and confused, this is for you: You’re NOT meant to be everything to everyone.
We burn out when we try to help ALL prospects, and have ALL options for different price points, and solve ALL problems.
No. Stop. Now. You need to know what you are uniquely qualified to provide, and then do that really well.
However, to do that well, you need to consider the quality of your attention and intention. You can’t do 100 things well.
What a Symphony Taught Me About Leadership
A couple of weeks ago, I was at a symphony, and our seats were amazing. We were above the orchestra, looking down at every instrumentalist and their setups. As the event began, I noticed that not every instrument was played in every song. In all honesty, I thought it was a crazy waste of money to have members of the LA Philharmonic not play for every piece. They’re there already... put them to work!
I watched as many instrumentals sat through three songs without any participation. They would sit with their hands politely folded in their laps, paying complete attention to the instrumentalists playing that piece. (Shout out to their professionalism, respect, and decorum.)
The wind section wasn’t jealous of the brass section when they were featured. The strings didn’t resent percussion when they had their piece.
Everyone knew their part. They didn’t do it all.
That’s what keeps the best of the best going: they don’t do everything for everyone.
Discover What is Yours To Do
In the same way, the only way to have a successful masterpiece in your business is to be clear and finite on who you are. Then you need to get specific about what you provide and how you provide it. Then learn when to “sit a song out.” Not all opportunities are supposed to be yours. Hone in on the top 3-4 things that are yours to do.
As a business strategist, I am like a conductor. I help you see clearly what songs are yours to play, what songs you’ll play a little, and what songs to sit out. We need professionals to do what they do best and that means knowing their part to play.
Doing this will revolutionize your life and work. Tell me where you’re at with this?
